The Best Wood For Furniture

!9#: The Best Wood For Furniture

Furniture nowadays is made of different kind of materials from aluminum to iron and even plastic. But for the people with a higher taste, the wood is always the most preferable option. Wooden furniture is generally more long lasting and timeless. Ready made furniture doesn't offer much choice over the type of wood that is used but custom furniture gives you the authority to choose the material according to your liking. But the kind of wood that should be chosen depends on many factors, for instance the usage and the space. A chair maker will use a different kind of wood for the chair while a cabinet maker will prefer another one. In custom cabinetry, the preference changes highly with respect to the space that the furniture is going to occupy. This is because different woods have different qualities such as hardness, softness, texture and flexibility. We will discuss a few commonly used ones.

Mahogany

Mahogany is probably most commonly used wood for furniture. The reasons are both its strength and its color. Mahogany can range from dark brown to reddish brown in color. It is used in fine furniture making, boat making, plywood and outdoor furniture making. This wood can last for years and has the ability to resist swelling and shrinkage. During the 18th century, mahogany became very popular furniture wood in Europe.

Maple

Maple is another high quality hardwood; it is usually very light brown in color. Its color makes it perfect for small spaces where more light reflection is needed. Maple is very popular for its smooth fine texture. It is used in the making of fine furniture, kitchen cabinets and bowling alley floors.

Oak

Oak is a very heavy hardwood and one of the most commonly used. There are further two type of oak, white oak and the red oak. Oak is famous mostly for its texture of large rings and circles. America and Canada are gifted with many Oak trees. The oak tree can get stained easily so it is easy to get it colored in nay other shade. Oak wood is used in making boat frames, furniture and floorings.

Beech

Beech is another strong hardwood used for making chair and tables. It is of pale color mostly and therefore it can be easily stained. In America and Canada, Beech is found in a good quantity.

Pinewood

Pine is softwood that is generally found in many parts of the world. There are many different kinds of pine like Ponderosa Pine and sugar Pine. They are both used in making furniture. Pine is mostly yellow in color. It is widely used in making plywood and veneer. Pine is known for its beautiful knots.

Cedar

Cedar is also softwood used for making furniture. One very distinct quality of cedar is its sweet odor. This odor makes it a very preferable for making chests and drawers as it repels moths and insects and also perfumes the things kept inside.

Other than these types there are several more types of wood, each with distinct features and usage. Plywood, veneer and MDF (Multiple density fiber are rather man made woods using sheets or laminates of other natural woods. In some cases the use of these wood is preferable than using the natural wood.

3 Kinds Of Wood Used In Real Wood Furniture

!9# 3 Kinds Of Wood Used In Real Wood Furniture

Real wood furniture is the most popular furniture in
existence. It's been around for hundreds of years and
probably existed when the cave people got tired of squatting
on the dirt floor of their caves and looked around for a
better way.

The woods that are fashioned into furniture fall into three
categories:

1. Hardwoods

2. Softwoods

3. Composites

Even the term 'hardwood' or 'softwood' is deceptive.
Hardwoods aren't necessarily harder, denser material. For
example, balsa wood is one of the lightest, least dense
woods there is, and it's considered a hardwood. Technically,
lumber is classified based on how the tree reproduces. As a
general rule, though, softwood trees are evergreen year
round while the hardwoods create the gorgeous autumn foliage
that we all love so much.

Hardwoods are considered the highest quality and are the
most expensive. Their natural colors vary from the darkest
woods to the lightest ones and and they can be stained or
painted for even more variety. Hardwood furniture is least
likely to warp or bend and is prized in all high quality
homes. The five woods most commonly used in furniture
production are cherry, walnut, oak, maple and mahogany.

Softwoods are less expensive than hardwoods, but they
require extra care. Because they are less durable, it's much
easier to scratch or dent softwood furniture. In addition,
they often don't have the beautiful grains of a hardwood,
and therefore don't stain as beautifully.

Pine is an example of a softwood that is commonly used for
furniture. These woods are often used in construction as
well so the choicest pieces are reserved for furniture. In
construction, knots and splits are common. Lots of
construction lumber will not accept paint and this kind of
wood is used for shelves or packing crates.

The softwood used in furniture is designated as "Appearance"
lumber and includes most softwood lumber that has been
custom milled to a pattern or otherwise surfaced on all four
sides.

Composites are the cheapest form of wood and are literally
manufactured, rather than grown.

1. Plywood: multiple layers of thin wooden sheets are glued
together and pressed. Plywood is strong and resists
swelling, shrinking and warping. There is some furniture
made directly from plywood, but generally it is only used as
a support when incorporated into furniture.

2. Particle board: sawdust and small wood chips are mixed
with glue or resin which is then shaped and pressure
treated. When used for inexpensive furniture, particle board
is usually covered with laminate or veneer. This is
necessary because particle board splits easily and the
laminate prevents splitting. However, the downside is that
the laminate may separate from the wood because the particle
board responds to temperature and pressure changes by
swelling and shrinking.

3. Hardboard: is made like particle board but it's placed
under higher pressure so it's stronger.

4. MDF or Medium Density Fiberboard: wood particles are
bonded with resin and compressed. It is harder than particle
board or hardboard, and can be cut like plywood although it
isn't as strong as plywood. Some MDF is covered with
melamine which is a durable plastic in a variety of colors.
The exposed edges of MDF are rough and need covering with
molding or some other decorative material.

Technically, furniture made from all of these wood products
is "real" wood furniture, even the composites. Prices and
quality range from the hardwoods down to the composites.
The higher you go up the spectrum, the more you can expect
to pay for your wood furniture. The good part, of course,
is that with proper care hardwood furniture will last for
decades or even generations. If you can afford it, always
choose hardwood furniture.

American Piece of Furniture History, a Rocking Chair

!9# American Piece of Furniture History, a Rocking Chair

The origin of the rocking chair is unknown but the first ones we do know of originated in England in the early 1700's and were made near Windsor Castle in Berkshire (which lies about a 20 minute drive away from Heathrow Airport) hence the name 'Windsor Rocker'. In all probability it came about through watching the therapeutic effect of gently rocking a baby in it's cradle, so why not do the same for adults? England was not the only country to have the rocker at that time, Sweden had another form around 1740 called the 'Gungstol', which just means rocking chair. These originally had 6 legs and were traditionally painted black with gold outlines. A four legged version became popular in the 1800's

Why does everyone love this particular style of chair? Could it be that they are so comfortable? When you sit in a rocking chair without rocking, the chair automatically rocks backwards until that your center of gravity is found. This has a relaxing benefit with the sitter being kept in an even position. Hence you are relaxed from the word 'Go'.

At some point in history rocking chairs arrived in the USA. It would be convenient to link their arrival with that of the 'Mayflower' but they were not heard of until about a hundred years after the pilgrims arrival and it wasn't until the 1800's that American furniture manufacturers saw any merit in their production. When they did, the Salem, Boston and American Windsor rocking chairs were born. These were all popular and were used mostly for sitting in the garden or relaxing on the porch.

Michael Thonet a German craftsman made the first 'Bentwood' rocking chair in 1860. This design was unlike others of it's time, it was lightweight and graceful. He used steamed wood which made them very affordable as well as beautiful and had great success with them in Europe. During the 1920's a new style came on the market which made them even more useful, the 'Folding' version, which when used in the garden could be folded up and taken indoors in bad weather. With the arrival of the automobile it was useful for picnics and other outdoor activities. After this, this type of chair virtually 'stood still' until the 1950's when Sam Maloof began making deluxe rocking chairs, which are different again, as their rockers are ski-shaped.

No one is sure whether the 'Wicker Rocker' as it became known, came before or after the wooden version but they became famous for their craftsmanship and creative designs and were very sought after. The same still stands today. Light, beautiful a real accent piece for any room, ultra comfortable and roomy, relaxing, and a joy for young and old. Wicker rocking chairs can be used on the porch, in the sun room, the family room, the bedroom, the baby's nursery and when it has done all that, a wash down and a can of spray paint and it's good to go for another quarter of a century.

European in origin, the rocking chair is also thoroughly American. President Lincoln greatly enjoyed the comfort of his chair. He was relaxing in one at the theater on the night he was assassinated. One of the first things President Kennedy did after taking office was to install a rocking chair in the oval office.

Charles Eames and his furniture

!9# Charles Eames and his furniture

Like many of his contemporaries, Arne Jacobsen, Isamu Noguchi, Mies van der Rohe, George Nelson, Charles Eames was an architect and a designer. This attention to design chairs and has been developed especially for the first time on our honeymoon in Europe in 1929 with first wife Catherine. And 'there that Charles first drawings of Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius and saw that he had a strong influence on him and his plans for the future.

10 years later, duringStudy at the Cranbrook Academy of Arts Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen designed in conjunction with its first chair in molded plywood. Together they won the 1940 Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Organic Furniture Competition. It was these first drafts, then shot lead on the field of chairs by Charles and Ray Eames in the spotlight with their LCW (Lounge Chair Wood) and DCW (Dining Chair Wood) range. It 'was lucky that the head of design for Herman MillerCorporation, the U.S. furniture retailer, was another designer of furniture is no longer a George Nelson. It 'was Nelson who recognized brilliance and Miller Eames believes Corporation, and some of his bentwood designs Eero is going into production.

Eames continued to experiment with innovative materials and technologies, including wire, fiberglass and aluminum. A collaboration with the latest DKR Wire Chair by Harry Bertoia led to the DSR and the Department of Eames, Bertoia duringwent on to produce the distinctive Bertoia Collection for Knoll. Charles Eames next project was a showroom for Herman Miller and a case of home design. Was supported by the magazine of architecture and arts of the house is an example of low cost, rapid construction while continuing the innovative style of Eames. The hotel is situated on a cliff overlooking the Pacific, was brilliant, bright colors, large windows and spacious, the design was far ahead of his time.

Charles and Ray Eamesmaintained the company's relationship with Herman Miller and Vitra in Europe today, the production of elegant Eames Lounge Chair and then the aluminum series. Although plywood shells very similar to the low cost of mass production and the area LCW DCW was built, the Eames Lounge Chair, made up of three opulent rosewood bowls and covered with soft aniline leather, is a step towards the higher end. Even if all the furniture designs of Charles Eames have stood the test of timePerhaps this was his greatest. In the '60s and '70s, any executive office or study, without complete.

While originally designed for outdoor use, has been synonymous with American boardrooms EA119 and EA219 Eames Aluminum Group chairs. Since American companies grew after the war that he wants to modern design furniture. There was also no shortage of interior design and exhibitions to showcase their work to the exhibition of IBM Mathematica, probably his most famous. MoMANew York also contributed to the awareness of Ray Charles and the exhibitors will showcase creations how to increase good design. Throughout the 70 years after winning the prize with MoMA Eero Saarinen, Charles Eames was still more than 22 different pieces of furniture produced today with the company Herman Miller. Hopefully in another 70 years yet.
